Punderson State Park, Ohio
Located in Newbury Township in Northeast Ohio, Punderson State Park is evidence of one of the last glaciers to move across Ohio thousands of years ago. The lake is one of the largest and deepest of its kind. It is a great location for paddling, fishing, or relaxing on the beach. The area also includes camping, hiking, and golfing.
The property includes an English Tudor Manor, which took nearly 20 years to build. Punderson Lake dates back to the early 1800’s when Lemuel Punderson settled the area to start a Grist Mill and Distillery. After his death, his wife named the Big Pond after her husband, Punderson Lake. Over time, the property surrounding the lake was slowly acquired and developed for private use. After financial hardship in 1925, Karl Long rescued the property and began building a 43-room English Style Tudor Mansion in place of the previous homestead. After spending $250,000 and four years later, Karl Long defaulted on his mortgage. In 1948, the rights of the land was sold to the State of Ohio. Further renovations were done and the manor was opened to the public in 1956.
Today, Punderson State Park Lodge has 31 guest rooms, dining and banquet rooms, meeting rooms, and an indoor and outdoor pool. On the property, there are 26 cabins, an 18 hole golf course, a marina, and campground area. With activities year round, the park also offers sledding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing.
